There will be 2 options for their choice computer. No matter which computer the child selects, the specs will be small, but capable. Both computers will have 16GB memory, and a 2TB storage drive. There will also be a 13″-13.3″ display, and will use a standard US Keyboard along with a trackpad. There will be a minimum of 2 Thunderbolt ports, 3.5mm audio port, along with Bluetooth, and Wifi?. Both computers will have Wifi? and Bluetooth. Both computers will support fingerprint reader for security.
When the child leaves my custody, they will be able to take their computer with them. They will obviously have their memory and storage, but they will lose access to their second drive, and will no longer have an included backup system. To compensate for this, the child might need cloud storage such as DropBox (cross platform), but will have more limited space than what was offered. For backup, they will want to acquire a minimum of a 4TB external USB-C hard drive.
Framework 13
In addition to the 2 Thunderbolt ports, there will be allowance for 2 more modules. This will include an audio jack, and a SDXC card reader. I personally feel that SD cards should be the standard with all computers, but I am obviously in the minority. The child will get Zorin OS?, and if they want Windows 11, they will have to pay for it out of their pocket. Since they will receive a cash gift, they will be able to use some of that for Windows. If they decide on Windows, I will strongly recommend the Professional version which will be more expensive. The advantage of the Framework over most other computers is the fact it is so upgradable, and parts can be replaced pretty easily.
MacBook Air
The preferred option will be the MacBook Air. I have found this easier to relate to than Zorin, and I will not use Windows The MacBook Air will have al of the features listed above with the components that ar for both systems, there will also be the M Series CPU which typically performs better than Intel or AMD. There will be a MagSafe charging port as well which will make it easier for the child to charge the computer without using their USB-C port.
